2012 Green Infrastructure Annual Report

During the last year, DEP has released design standards for green infrastructure, promulgated new stormwater performance standards for new developments and redevelopments, completed construction of the first neighborhood demonstration area in East New York, oversaw the completion of grant projects at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and Queens College, initiated construction on area-wide contracts for the Flushing Bay and Bronx River drainage areas, and much more.

In September 2010, New York City released the NYC Green Infrastructure Plan which presents an alternative approach to improving water quality that integrates “green infrastructure,” such as swales and green roofs, with investments to optimize the existing system and to build targeted, cost-effective “grey” or traditional infrastructure.

Public Outreach

On June 28, 2010, DEP held a city-wide meeting to present and review the analysis and incorporate the ideas of the public into the NYC Green Infrastructure Plan. During this meeting, DEP presented a general overview of the Plan and then the attendees broke into three groups – concerning two watersheds each – in which the public offered general and targeted ideas about green infrastructure in New York City.
