Computers and Monitors

Select a product that will meet your needs for the foreseeable future. Purchasing a new monitor every time you upgrade your computer may not be necessary and is expensive. Reducing the number of computer monitors discarded by New Yorkers reduces the amount of hazardous lead glass that enters the waste stream.

Buy a monitor with the ENERGY STAR® label. Such monitors automatically power down to 15 watts or less when not in use. It is easy to power the monitor from “sleep” mode by simply touching the keyboard or mouse.

Consider upgrading, rather than buying new. Instead of purchasing a new computer, for example, consider increasing the memory of the old one, or adding accessories.

Donate, recycle or take back unwanted or non-working computers.
